ROTHKO INSPIRED COLOR BLOCK QUILT

A client came to me requesting a custom quilt be made from a collection of boiled wool and thick cotton fabrics she had acquired over time. She wanted a modern color blocked quilt in the style of Mark Rothko's 1960 painting 'No. 16' which she had recently seen at the Museum of Modern Art. I thought it a terrific idea. We worked thru the placement of the colors (marigold, black, teal) on the periwinkle background and I quilted it in a simple grid pattern around 4" blocks. The backing was another heavy wool blanket so it meant there was no need for yet another layer of batting.

The backing could turned out graphic as well, it makes it reversible.

To offset the bold color blocks I chose a midnight blue ticking for a bit of whimsy that adds visual interest.
